An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is a large metal box that regulates and circulates air by taking in outdoor or recirculated air, conditioning it (filtering, heating, cooling, or humidifying), and then distributing it through ductwork to various rooms.
Core Components
Housing/Casing: An insulated metal enclosure that protects internal parts and reduces noise.
Filters: Remove dust, pollen, and bacteria. Standard units often use a coarse panel filter followed by a finer bag filter.
Blower (Fan): An electromechanical system that pulls air through the unit and pushes it into the building's ducts.
Heating & Cooling Coils: Heat exchangers that adjust air temperature using chilled water, hot water, steam, or refrigerant.
Humidifiers/Dehumidifiers: Control moisture levels to maintain comfort and prevent mold growth.
Mixing Chamber: A section where return air from the building is mixed with fresh outdoor air to improve energy efficiency
An Air Handling unit, also known as AHU, is a component used for air treatment, regulation and circulation in large HVAC systems. Some of its functions include collecting air, removing dust particles and adjusting temperature and humidity.
AHUs can be used in a wide range of buildings where fresh air isn’t easily available, such as shopping malls, restaurants, offices or industrial spaces. They are used for different purposes, among them:
Air purification and cleaning through filters. They can reduce and eliminate dirt, dust, and even bacteria.
Ventilation (bringing outside air in and optionally extracting dirty indoor air out)
Indoor humidity control to create comfortable environments
Regulating/conditioning the temperature (hot or cold)
